English is a basic global language that helps someone to understand or communicate with people. It could be a barrier but it is not the main barrier and it is not applicable to all. In our country ‘Bangladesh’, most of us study English books as textbooks. For higher studies, we need to read books of foreign writers because the Bengali writer’s books are not available. Even from the school level we are starting to learn English. That is why we are familiar with this language. And after a few practices, we can catch the language. After that, it wouldn’t be a big problem for us.
How could the English language be a barrier for a person?
In so many ways the English language could be a barrier for a person, among them communication is one of the most vital issues that have an impact on every step of life. From our perspective, most of us are coming from Bengali medium or vocational or madrasa systems. We are not very expert in English and that is why we can’t contact foreign people. Most often it happens that our skills are quite good, we know so many things but we cannot express them to the clients or at the proper place because of the language barrier. In our education system when we are passing out we don’t see the real impact of it but when we face it in professional life we can understand it very well because in professional life it may happen one needs to deal with international people or to compete with a competitive world market. Even as a student, when someone is going abroad he or she needs to deal with foreigners where English is working as a language tool. So, if a student doesn’t have proper profciency in the English language it could be happened that he or she may face difficulties in his or her daily life or achieving his or her required academic score.
When we come out from Bengali Medium, how many difficulties do we need to face to cope with the international marketplace because of a language barrier?
Language is the way by which you can communicate with other people. Our mother tongue is Bangla, we are not comfortable speaking English even though we are not practicing it anywhere in our daily life. So, when we go for higher studies we need to take the IELTS exam. To prove to others that we are quite good at English. This exam is a test that certifies us that we are eligible for higher studies. In each place, we need to prove ourselves because of communication skills. Technical hand or creative people are most often introverted by nature. They can’t express themselves in a good way because of personality traits. Despite that, if they face an extra language barrier they become squeezed and it would become an extra pressure for themselves. But to compete with this global competitive world we need to be more skilled and need to explore ourselves. And for exploring ourselves there is no alternative other than to develop communication skills. And for communication ‘English’ is a basic tool that someone needs to learn to survive in this competitive marketplace.
Is it really difficult for a Bangla medium student to compete with an international student because of the English language? If yes then in which particular place do we need to work?
English is a basic course. From primary education, we need to start learning English. In our system, it is embedded but still, most of us are not used to English. Why? What are the reasons behind it? We need to search it out. We don’t know how to learn a language. We find out different procedures. Sometimes we think if we learn it through grammar then it would be easy for us. But is it really? When we make people uncomfortable by taking their pronunciation, and their way of talking, and mocking themselves they automatically feel low and lose their hope to develop. They feel shy and awkward or it may happen in their minds they feel fear about it. So they become stuck and cannot learn this language in an easy way. So, we need to make people comfortable in every aspect so that they can feel confident about themselves. And we know, a confident person can do anything. So, we need to work on people’s perceptions and gradually need to give a new dimension to the overall learning process.
Why do we need this foreign language?
